A signal phrase that Charlip uses is when after her quote she says "If only that were true...", meaning that she was disagreeing with the quote she inserted, which is where the "I Say" came in. The Charlip described what her sociology professor said about the different classes in society, and she stated a whole bunch of questionss, questioning what defines society. Another part where Charlip explained her thoughts is when she said "I always felt we were in no man's land." So she specifically stated how she felt in the last paragraph.
